C-DAC Celebrates 39th Foundation Day, Leaders Highlight Role in India’s Technology and Space Future

The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) marked its 39th Foundation Day, with leading policymakers and scientists highlighting the organisation’s crucial role in strengthening India’s capabilities in advanced computing, digital technologies, and strategic sectors.

Addressing the event virtually, S. Krishnan, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), praised C-DAC for its contributions to critical technology domains such as high-performance computing, cybersecurity, semiconductor technologies, and emerging digital platforms.

Key Role in National Technology Missions

Krishnan noted that C-DAC has played a major role in several flagship national initiatives, including the:

  • National Supercomputing Mission
  • India Semiconductor Mission
  • National Quantum Mission

He emphasised that the organisation continues to strengthen India’s scientific and digital ecosystem through research, innovation, and infrastructure development.

The Secretary also highlighted the need to focus on emerging technologies such as quantum computing, RISC-V architecture, blockchain, and the Internet of Things (IoT). He stressed the importance of achieving self-reliance in core digital technologies, including operating systems and database platforms.

Krishnan further called for stronger collaboration between industry, academia, defence institutions, and research organisations, noting that translational research capable of delivering real-world applications is essential for national progress.

C-DAC’s Role in Space and Digital Capabilities

Speaking at the event, S. Somanath highlighted C-DAC’s significant contribution to India’s space and computing ecosystem. He pointed to the organisation’s legacy in supercomputing through the PARAM series, which has been instrumental in advancing scientific research and technological development.

He also noted C-DAC’s collaboration with Indian Space Research Organisation in developing computing systems and electronic technologies used in space missions.

According to Somanath, the global space sector is witnessing rapid changes, including the expansion of satellite constellations, increasing reliance on AI-driven autonomous systems, and the integration of space technologies with emerging digital domains.

He emphasised the importance of indigenous development of small satellite platforms, supply chains, and critical components, urging C-DAC to align its supercomputing initiatives with national priorities in advanced computing and space technologies.

Focus on Innovation and Industry Collaboration

Sudeep Shrivastava also addressed the gathering, congratulating C-DAC on its achievements over the past 39 years. He stressed the need for people-centric technological solutions, bridging the gap between research and commercialisation, and maintaining high standards of quality in technological innovation.

Shrivastava highlighted the importance of innovation, intellectual property generation, and excellence in research, noting that these elements are essential for strengthening India’s global competitiveness in emerging technologies.

The dignitaries concluded that institutions like C-DAC are essential for positioning India as a global leader in critical and emerging technologies, particularly in areas such as supercomputing, semiconductor development, quantum technologies, and advanced digital infrastructure.
