The Orange Brand Stirs the Market Again
Table of Contents
KTM is once again revving up excitement among Indian motorcycling enthusiasts. The Austrian brand’s next big reveal might just be the all-new KTM 390 SMC R, a sharp supermoto offering that’s been spotted testing in India for the second time—this time, under heavy camouflage.
With expectations high and spy shots making the rounds online, the 390 SMC R could be India’s first premium supermoto motorcycle priced under ₹3 lakh. Could this finally kickstart a new genre in India’s two-wheeler market?
Supermoto Style on a Budget
According to leaked insights and the test mule recently spotted on Indian roads, the 390 SMC R borrows heavily from the 390 Adventure and the upcoming Enduro-R. The bike sports 17-inch spoked wheels—ideal for tarmac and light off-roading—and appears to offer 230 mm of suspension travel at both ends.
The front is expected to feature WP Apex USD forks, while the rear gets a WP Monoshock adjustable for rebound and preload—hardware typically seen on much more expensive bikes. A dual-channel ABS with Supermoto mode is also expected, allowing riders to slide the rear wheel, enhancing fun on twisty backroads or track setups.

Performance and Features
The upcoming KTM 390 SMC R is expected to be powered by the same 399cc liquid-cooled engine found on the Duke 390, producing 45.3 bhp and 39 Nm of torque. This proven motor is praised for its punchy mid-range and high-revving nature—traits perfect for a supermoto bike meant to be flicked around corners.
In terms of rider tech, the bike is likely to come equipped with a 4.3-inch TFT display, complete with Bluetooth connectivity—keeping riders informed and connected while on the move.
Expected Price and Market Impact
With a projected price tag of under ₹3 lakh, the KTM 390 SMC R would stand in a class of its own. Currently, there are no true supermoto-style motorcycles in the Indian market in this price bracket. If priced right, this motorcycle could unlock an entirely new category for urban riders and enthusiasts.
This would be in line with KTM’s aggressive pricing strategies seen with other models like the Duke 390 and RC 390, both of which have carved strong fan bases in India.
India’s First Affordable Supermoto?
India has long been dominated by commuters, cruisers, and sportbikes—but supermotos, which offer a hybrid mix of off-road agility and street fun, remain largely unexplored. KTM might be the first major brand to bring that thrill to Indian tarmac.
A similar move was seen in 2023 when Samsung banned employees from using ChatGPT after proprietary data was accidentally leaked, underlining how tech users—and now riders—seek smarter tools with better control. (Source: Bloomberg)
Similarly, the new SMC R seems poised to offer a blend of advanced rider control, track-inspired design, and affordability, putting it in a unique position to lead a new motorcycling trend.
What’s Next for KTM India?
Beyond the SMC R, reports suggest that KTM also plans to upgrade its entry-level lineup, possibly replacing the 125cc Duke and RC models with 160cc variants. This hints at a broader strategy to revamp its India lineup, aligning with evolving customer preferences.
These launches, if timed well, could solidify KTM’s lead in the premium entry-level motorcycle segment—a space where brands like TVS and Yamaha are also stepping up their game.
A Genre-Defining Move?
While an official launch date is still awaited, the repeated sightings of the KTM 390 SMC R suggest that its debut is imminent. If KTM can deliver the promised features and performance at the anticipated price, it might just kickstart a supermoto revolution in India—one wheelie at a time.
