Prime Minister tells Rajya Sabha India is working through diplomacy to secure supplies and protect citizens as war impacts global trade routes
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday addressed the Rajya Sabha on the ongoing conflict in West Asia, warning of its growing impact on global energy supplies, trade routes and the safety of Indian nationals in the region.
He said the conflict, now entering its fourth week, has disrupted key international shipping lanes such as the Strait of Hormuz, creating challenges for the movement of oil, gas and other essential commodities critical to India’s economy.

The Prime Minister highlighted that many ships remain stranded in the Strait of Hormuz, including vessels with Indian crew members on board. He noted that nearly one crore Indians live and work in Gulf countries, making their safety and livelihoods a major concern for the government.
He also pointed out that attacks on commercial shipping and disruptions to global waterways are unacceptable and have wider implications for international trade and energy security.

Addressing the Upper House, the Prime Minister emphasised the need for a unified call for peace and dialogue. He said India has consistently opposed attacks on civilians and critical infrastructure, including energy and transport systems.
He informed Parliament that India is in regular contact with countries in the region, including Gulf nations, Iran, Israel and the United States, with the aim of promoting de-escalation and restoring normalcy. He added that discussions have also focused on reopening key maritime routes.
India’s Diplomatic and Strategic Response
The government has stepped up diplomatic outreach since the conflict began, with the Prime Minister holding multiple conversations with leaders in West Asia. He said India’s efforts are focused on ensuring safe passage for Indian ships and maintaining steady supplies of oil and gas.
Despite disruptions, the government has arranged alternative supply routes, and shipments of crude oil and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) have continued to reach India from different parts of the world.
The Prime Minister also highlighted India’s preparedness, noting that the country has expanded its energy import sources over the years and built strategic petroleum reserves to manage such crises.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, handling a significant share of global oil and gas shipments. Any disruption in this region can affect fuel prices, supply chains and economic stability worldwide.

The Prime Minister assured that adequate supplies of essential commodities, including fertilizers, are being maintained, and efforts are underway to ensure that farmers are not adversely affected during the upcoming agricultural season.
He also urged state governments to remain vigilant against hoarding and ensure uninterrupted supply of essential goods, especially for vulnerable sections of society.
