Defence Minister asks armed forces and agencies to study lessons from ongoing conflict and strengthen self-reliance
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday reviewed the evolving situation in West Asia and its potential impact on India’s defence preparedness during a high-level meeting with top military and defence officials in New Delhi.
The बैठक included the Chief of Defence Staff, Service Chiefs, Defence Secretary, Secretary (Defence Production) and the Chairman of DRDO, focusing on both immediate risks and long-term strategic implications of the ongoing conflict in the region.
Key Highlights
The review covered the global and regional security environment, including the possibility of escalation and its implications for India. Officials also assessed the impact on defence supply chains, including procurement, production and maintenance of military equipment.
The meeting highlighted both challenges and opportunities arising from the current geopolitical situation.
Official Statement
During the review, the Defence Minister directed officials to closely study operational and technological aspects of the ongoing conflict to strengthen India’s preparedness.
He emphasised the need to develop a comprehensive, integrated roadmap for the next decade. The roadmap, he said, should incorporate lessons from current conflicts while addressing future challenges and opportunities, with a strong focus on self-reliance and operational readiness.
Context: Global Conflict and Defence Planning
The ongoing conflict in West Asia has raised concerns globally, particularly around security stability, supply chains and military preparedness. For India, which relies on a mix of domestic and imported defence equipment, disruptions in global supply chains can affect readiness.
Recent geopolitical tensions have also highlighted the importance of adapting to new forms of warfare, including advanced technologies and evolving combat strategies.

Public Impact: Why It Matters
Strengthening defence preparedness has implications for national security and strategic stability. A focus on self-reliance in defence production, often referred to as “Aatmanirbharta,” can reduce dependence on imports and improve response capabilities during crises.
Studying real-world conflicts can also help the armed forces adapt to emerging threats and improve operational efficiency.
Conclusion
The Defence Minister’s review signals a continued emphasis on long-term planning and readiness in a rapidly changing global security environment.
As India evaluates the lessons from ongoing conflicts, the proposed roadmap is expected to guide defence policy and capability development over the next decade, with a focus on resilience and self-reliance.
