President of India Droupadi Murmu attended a special event at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre to commemorate the milestone of five billion meals served by the Akshaya Patra Foundation in support of children’s education and nutrition.
Addressing the gathering, the President described the achievement as a remarkable contribution to the country’s educational and social development. She noted that the theme of the event, “From a Well-Nourished and Well-Educated India to a Developed India,” reflects the importance of building a healthy and educated society in realizing the vision of a developed nation by 2047.
Shared Responsibility for Children’s Future
President Murmu emphasized that ensuring a safe and bright future for children is a collective responsibility that goes beyond government efforts. She said that when teachers, parents, social organizations, corporate institutions, and communities work together, they help build a strong foundation for future generations.
She stressed the importance of guaranteeing every child access to quality education, nutritious food, good health, and a safe environment, which are essential for the holistic development of young citizens.
Education as a Tool for Empowerment
Highlighting the transformative power of education, the President said that schooling shapes opportunities in an individual’s life and enables empowerment. According to her, the process of building skills and capabilities begins the moment children enter school.
“Education equips children with the knowledge and experiences required to face everyday challenges and become responsible citizens,” she said.
She also commended the Akshaya Patra Foundation for its 25 years of continuous efforts in addressing child malnutrition and encouraging school attendance by providing mid-day meals to students.
Role of Government Initiatives
The President noted that the Government of India has introduced several initiatives aimed at improving nutrition and healthcare services for mothers and children. She highlighted the impact of the PM POSHAN Scheme school lunch programme, which has significantly encouraged parents to send their children to school.
Studies have shown that the programme has led to increased enrolment, attendance, and retention in schools, while also improving students’ learning abilities and academic performance.
She also appreciated the foundation’s role in supporting the objectives of Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, which aims to ensure inclusive and quality education for all children by 2030.
Investing in the Nation’s Future
Concluding her address, President Murmu said that children benefiting from mid-day meal programmes are not merely recipients of aid but the architects of India’s future.
She remarked that the nutritious food provided today is an investment in the country’s human capital, as healthy, educated, and skilled children will form the workforce that will drive India’s progress and help achieve the vision of “Viksit Bharat” by 2047.
