New cancer treatment facility aims to improve access to affordable care and early diagnosis in Uttar Pradesh
President Droupadi Murmu on Friday inaugurated a new oncology block at the Ramakrishna Mission Sevashram in Vrindavan, marking an expansion of cancer care services in Uttar Pradesh. The facility, named the Nand Kishor Somani Oncology Block, is expected to strengthen early diagnosis and treatment for patients, particularly those from economically weaker sections.
Key Highlights
- New oncology block launched at Ramakrishna Mission Sevashram, Vrindavan
- Focus on early cancer detection, treatment, and awareness
- Emphasis on affordable healthcare access for underserved communities
- Initiative aligns with national healthcare programs like Ayushman Bharat
President Highlights Role of Compassion in Healthcare
Addressing the gathering, President Murmu underscored the role of service-oriented institutions in addressing public health challenges. She noted that the Ramakrishna Mission exemplifies how spiritual values can translate into tangible social impact, particularly in healthcare.
She highlighted cancer as a growing public health concern, stressing that early detection and timely treatment are critical in improving survival rates. However, she acknowledged that high treatment costs often put care out of reach for many families.
Murmu pointed out that institutions like the Ramakrishna Mission can bridge this gap by offering accessible services, conducting awareness campaigns, and promoting preventive healthcare.

Expanding Healthcare Access Through Policy Support
The President also referred to ongoing government efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure across the country. She cited the Ayushman Bharat scheme, which provides health insurance coverage to economically vulnerable populations, including support for cancer treatment.
Launched in 2018, Ayushman Bharat is one of India’s flagship healthcare initiatives, aimed at reducing out-of-pocket medical expenses and expanding access to secondary and tertiary care services.
Background: Ramakrishna Mission’s Role in Social Service
The Ramakrishna Mission, inspired by the teachings of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and Swami Vivekananda, operates a network of hospitals, schools, and relief services across India. Its healthcare institutions are known for combining modern medical practices with a service-driven approach.
The Sevashram in Vrindavan has been providing medical services for decades, particularly to pilgrims and local residents.
Public Impact: Who Benefits?
The new oncology block is expected to:
- Improve access to cancer screening and treatment in the region
- Reduce the financial burden on low-income families
- Support early diagnosis, which is key to effective cancer care
- Strengthen local healthcare infrastructure in and around Vrindavan
By expanding cancer care services at a charitable institution, the initiative could help address regional gaps in oncology treatment, especially for patients who may not be able to afford private healthcare.
Looking Ahead
The inauguration of the oncology block reflects a broader push to enhance healthcare capacity in India, particularly in specialized fields like cancer treatment. As demand for such services rises, similar public and charitable sector initiatives are likely to play an important role in complementing government efforts.
The facility is expected to become operational soon, with a focus on delivering affordable and accessible cancer care to those in need.
