New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Saturday that India has reached a significant milestone in defence manufacturing, with production surpassing Rs 1.25 lakh crore. Speaking at the 16th Rozgar Mela via video conferencing, where he distributed appointment letters to over 51,000 young recruits across various government departments, Modi highlighted the transformative growth in India’s industrial and employment sectors, underscoring the pivotal role of the nation’s youth in driving progress.

“India has come a long way from having just two to four mobile manufacturing units a decade ago. Today, we boast 300 units, providing jobs to millions of young Indians. Similarly, our defence manufacturing sector, which gained global attention after Operation Sindoor, is setting new benchmarks. Defence production has now crossed Rs 1.25 lakh crore, reflecting India’s growing self-reliance and industrial strength,” PM Modi stated.

Youth as India’s Greatest Asset

Modi emphasized that India’s youth are the cornerstone of the nation’s bright future, describing them as a unique blend of demographic strength and democratic values. “The world recognizes India’s dual strengths: our youthful demographics and our robust democracy. Our youth are not just our greatest asset but also the strongest guarantee of a prosperous future. My recent five-country visit showcased the global resonance of India’s youthful energy, with agreements signed that will create opportunities for our youth both domestically and internationally,” he said, as quoted by ANI.

The Prime Minister highlighted the government’s commitment to harnessing this potential through policies aimed at fostering prosperity. He pointed to initiatives that have transformed India into a hub for innovation and manufacturing, creating a ripple effect of economic opportunities for the younger generation.

Employment Linked Incentive Scheme

A key focus of Modi’s address was the government’s efforts to boost private-sector employment through the newly approved Employment Linked Incentive Scheme. With a budget allocation of approximately Rs 1 lakh crore, the scheme aims to generate around 3.5 crore jobs by supporting first-time employees in the private sector.

“Under the Employment Linked Incentive Scheme, the government will provide Rs 15,000 to youth securing their first job in the private sector, effectively contributing to their initial salary. This initiative is designed to empower young Indians entering the workforce and stimulate private-sector growth. With a budget of Rs 1 lakh crore, we expect this scheme to create approximately 3.5 crore jobs, paving the way for economic inclusivity,” Modi explained.

Defence Manufacturing: A Symbol of Self-Reliance

The record-breaking defence production figure of Rs 1.25 lakh crore underscores India’s strides toward self-reliance under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. Modi highlighted the sector’s growth as a testament to India’s technological advancements and skilled workforce. “Our defence manufacturing sector is not just about production numbers; it’s about building a self-reliant India that can compete on the global stage. The success of Operation Sindoor showcased our capabilities, and today, we are setting new records,” he said.

The growth in defence manufacturing has been accompanied by increased exports and technological innovation, positioning India as a key player in the global defence industry. This achievement aligns with the government’s broader vision of strengthening domestic industries while creating employment opportunities for the youth.

Rozgar Mela: Empowering the Youth

The 16th Rozgar Mela, a flagship initiative to provide government jobs to young Indians, saw over 51,000 appointment letters distributed to new recruits. These appointments span various ministries and departments, including education, health, railways, and public sector undertakings. Modi congratulated the appointees, urging them to contribute to nation-building with dedication and innovation.

“This Rozgar Mela is a celebration of our youth’s potential. Each appointment letter represents a new chapter in India’s growth story, where our young workforce drives progress across sectors. From defence to technology, from governance to manufacturing, your contributions will shape the future of our nation,” Modi told the recruits.

Broader Economic Impact

The Prime Minister also contextualized these achievements within India’s broader economic transformation. The expansion of mobile manufacturing units from a handful to 300 reflects the success of policies promoting industrial growth and job creation. Similarly, the defence sector’s milestone is part of a larger push toward self-reliance, with initiatives like the Employment Linked Incentive Scheme ensuring that economic growth translates into tangible opportunities for millions.

Modi noted that India’s global standing has been bolstered by its youthful energy and democratic values. “Every country I visited recently echoed the same sentiment: India’s youth are a force to be reckoned with. The agreements we signed will open doors for our young innovators, entrepreneurs, and professionals, both at home and abroad,” he added.

Looking Ahead

The government’s focus on job creation, industrial growth, and self-reliance signals a robust roadmap for India’s economic future. The Employment Linked Incentive Scheme, combined with record-breaking defence production, underscores a multi-pronged approach to empowering the youth and strengthening the economy. As India continues to leverage its demographic dividend, initiatives like these are expected to drive sustainable growth and global competitiveness.
