The Maharashtra government has moved to calm public concerns over fuel availability after reports of panic buying and alleged hoarding triggered fears of petrol and diesel shortages in parts of the state amid rising global tensions linked to the Iran-Israel conflict.
State officials on Friday insisted that fuel supplies remain stable across Maharashtra and warned that strict action would be taken against individuals or groups accused of creating artificial shortages through hoarding or misinformation.
The remarks come as geopolitical instability in West Asia continues to influence global energy markets, prompting concerns over crude oil prices, supply chains, and inflationary pressures in several economies, including India.
Government Rejects Claims of Fuel Shortage
Addressing a press conference in Mumbai, Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Navnath Ban said there was no actual shortage of petrol or diesel in Maharashtra despite reports of long queues and increased fuel purchases in some regions.
According to Ban, certain traders and hoarders were attempting to create panic by artificially restricting fuel availability, particularly in parts of the Marathwada region, including Jalna and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
He stated that the state government had begun monitoring such activities and would initiate stringent action against those found responsible for manipulating fuel distribution or spreading rumours.
Officials stressed that India continues to maintain adequate fuel reserves and that supply chains remain operational despite volatility in global oil markets.

The warnings come against the backdrop of escalating tensions in West Asia, a region critical to global crude oil production and energy exports.
Any prolonged instability involving Iran and Israel has the potential to disrupt shipping routes, increase insurance costs for oil transport, and drive up international crude prices. According to Bhujbal, diesel sales in Maharashtra surged by nearly 42 percent, while petrol sales increased by around 21 percent as consumers rushed to fuel stations fearing shortages.
Such sudden spikes in demand can temporarily strain local distribution networks even when overall fuel availability remains sufficient.
Officials cautioned that panic-driven purchasing can unintentionally worsen local supply disruptions by exhausting inventories faster than scheduled replenishment cycles.
Authorities have urged residents not to rely on unverified social media messages or rumours regarding fuel scarcity.

India remains heavily dependent on imported crude oil, making global energy developments closely tied to domestic economic stability.
The country imports more than 80 percent of its crude oil requirements, meaning international conflicts and supply disruptions can quickly influence inflation, currency movements, and fiscal planning.
